Hospital Colonia de Barbacena

An article published in the newspaper El País approaches the history of the Hospital Colônia de Barbacena and its atrocities during most of the 20th century. This mental asylum was a destination for the confinement of thousands of people, many of them mentally healthy, who were subjected to degrading conditions of survival. For 25 years, a museum installed in one of the hospital's old pavilions has helped to keep this story alive so that it never happens again.

The report can be accessed here.

For more information, a detailed account of the history of this establishment can be found in the book Holocausto Brasileiro, by Daniela Arbex. A documentary based on this work has also been produced and is available here.
