First LGBTQIA+ prison in Brazil

Last week the prison administration in Minas Gerais launched the first penal establishment exclusively dedicated to the LGBTQIA+ inmates in the country. After a series of incidents with this population, the state administration decided to transform the Jason Albergaria Prison, in São Joaquim de Bicas, into an institution integrally reserved to this group.

Although the initiative is intended to provide services specifically aimed at this population, there is a fear of moving members of this group to an establishment far away from their original places of residence. The potential distance from their families and friends could result in difficulties in visiting and maintaining relationships outside prison walls.
